Everything I’ve learned in my life, I’ve learned through relationships. I understand myself through my relationship to family, friends, lovers, stories, and artists I’ve never met. My relationship with my work has had just such an impact on my life.
Painting is a fantastic way to examine emotion and memory, as paint undeniably reveals your inner state, similarly to the way tea leaves are said to divine your future. I often paint in this intuitive manner, beginning with rough layers of gesso on wood, allowing the composition to come forth and reveal itsself. These works are mainly inspired from the landscapes of my youth, and the feeling of reaching out to a feeling of home you can’t quite grasp.
My drawings and multimedia works are typically more conceptual than my paintings. Instead of starting with a blank slate and allowing the piece to emerge, I start with a concept or archetype that has been lingering in my mind, and use the creation of the work to explore my ideas on the central theme.
I’m inspired by Jungian psychology, astrology, the lanscapes of California, the consistency of memory, the paintings and writings of Etel Adnan, and the work of Hilma af Klint. My work is my form of documenting and processing my experience of being alive, and a representation of my understanding of the world which exists within and without me.
